how to remove a manager from google business profile
Removing a manager is an access change, not a way to erase the work they published. Before acting, confirm the correct business, the person’s account and who is authorized to make the change. A departing contractor, a shared login and an unfamiliar name can require different checks.
Short answer: An authorized owner can remove a user through More, Business Profile settings, People and access, then Remove person. Confirm the exact account and role first, including any new-owner restrictions. Past contributions stay on the profile. Check business-group or shared-account access separately rather than assuming one removal ends every route in.
For example, imagine a shop replacing an agency whose staff member was invited as a Manager. An owner can remove that role without deleting the agency’s previous business replies. If the staff member instead used the owner’s login, the named-user list alone will not show how that access worked. The distinction matters before anyone presses Remove.
how to remove a manager from google business profile
Sign in to an account you are entitled to use that has owner access to the correct profile. Google’s find your business guidance describes searching for the business name and city or “my business” in the associated account. Check the location as well as the name if the business has several branches.
The owners-and-managers instructions give this route:
- Open More, then Business Profile settings.
- Select People and access.
- Select the intended user.
- Select Remove person.
Read the account identifier and role before completing the change. A familiar display name is not enough if two people use similar names or an agency has several accounts. Confirm which relationship has ended and whether the person still needs another authorized responsibility.
Google says the removed user receives an email. Plan the handover with that notification in mind rather than assuming the change will be silent. Afterwards, check the access list and the remaining owners rather than relying only on memory of the action.
how to remove user from google business profile
On an individual Business Profile, Managers cannot add or remove other users. Owners can manage other users’ access, subject to the relevant restrictions. A Manager who needs a colleague removed should ask an authorized owner; sharing an owner’s password is not an appropriate substitute for a role.
New owners and managers have a seven-day restriction on certain sensitive functions. Removing other owners or managers and transferring primary ownership are among them. This is not a ban on every profile task for a week, and waiting does not turn a Manager into an Owner.
If a control is unavailable, check the actual account, selected profile, role, how recently access was granted and any error message. An unresponsive or missing control does not diagnose one cause on its own. Do not repeatedly change roles to test a theory.
Sometimes the intended change is a smaller role rather than removal. Google documents editing Access on the same user screen, selecting the new role and saving. Understand what the remaining role permits: Manager is still substantial access to business information and replies, not a read-only role.
Primary ownership needs separate care. The primary owner cannot simply leave without transferring that role. Follow the primary-ownership guidance, including the new-user restrictions, rather than treating every owner entry as interchangeable.
What a removed person keeps and what they lose
Google says a removed user can no longer change business information or perform administrative tasks through that role. Their past replies, posts, comments and other actions remain on the Business Profile.
That is useful for continuity. A customer can still read the business’s earlier response after the person who wrote it leaves. It does not mean the former manager owns that response, that their earlier edits are reversed, or that Google guarantees permanent visibility of every contribution.
If something published earlier is inaccurate, deal with that content separately through an authorized account. For example, removing a departing manager is not a correction to opening hours they entered incorrectly. Identify the factual issue and make the appropriate correction; avoid assuming that access removal restores an earlier version.
There is a much more destructive operation with a similar name: Remove profile content and managers. That affects all owners and managers and permanently removes business-added content, including review replies, while customer reviews remain. It is not the way to remove one contractor or leave your own role.
how to remove access from google business profile
The named-user list answers who has a role on that profile. It is not a complete account-security assessment. A person may also have access through a business group, a shared login or another business system with separate permissions.
If a Google Account password was shared, secure the account with its legitimate owner. Google’s account-security guidance addresses suspicious activity, devices, recovery details and other security settings. If you suspect unauthorized use, follow that guidance promptly rather than assuming removal of a different named account solves the problem.
A password change is relevant, but it is not a universal sign-out guarantee. Google’s password help lists exceptions for some devices and connections. Review the relevant access as well as the password. Do not ask a former employee for their personal login or recovery code.
The same principle applies to a website or another system the contractor used: its authorized owner needs to review its own permissions. Removing someone from Business Profile does not change those independent accounts. Keep the scope tied to the access they actually had, rather than resetting unrelated systems without a reason.
How to remove yourself
For your own role, select yourself in People and access, choose Stop managing and confirm. The primary owner must first transfer primary ownership to an appropriate other user. Check that the receiving person has the intended access and can take responsibility before completing a handover.
Leaving your role preserves the profile’s existing content under Google’s documented process. It does not close the business or remove the public listing. Choose this route when your job is finished, rather than removing the profile’s content and everyone else’s access.
When an agency will not hand it back
Google’s ownership rules require authorized representatives to respond promptly to access requests and transfer ownership to the business owner immediately upon request. This is a platform obligation. It is not evidence that every ownership dispute can be resolved with one message or a guaranteed deadline.
First establish who has which role. If an authorized owner can make the intended change, use the appropriate role controls. If the verified profile is held elsewhere, Google’s ownership-request guidance describes the storefront/hybrid process and a separate support route for service-area businesses without a physical shop or office.
An ownership request does not guarantee a transfer after three days. The response and available next steps matter. Keep the business identity and your authorization clear; creating a replacement profile or trying to obtain someone else’s password does not settle the access problem.
Common mistakes we see
In our practice, unclear access arrangements can outlast the work they were meant to support. Agreeing who may act for the business and recording the handover helps avoid a later disagreement about an unfamiliar account.
A short written confirmation can identify the person, profile and agreed change. It does not need passwords or a copy of the whole access list in a public thread. Keep it with the people responsible for the handover and avoid including customer records.
The common points to check are:
- Shared credentials instead of separate invitations. A named role makes responsibility clearer; a shared account requires its own security review.
- Removing the wrong account. Confirm the identifier and relationship before acting on a display name.
- Assuming removal reverses content. Old edits and responses need separate attention if they contain a problem.
- Forgetting a separate access route. Review applicable group or other system permissions with the responsible owner.
- Leaving responsibility unclear. Confirm who will handle legitimate work after the change, without giving everybody ownership merely for convenience.
An unfamiliar name is a reason to investigate the authorization, not proof of misconduct. Where suspicious activity is present, secure the affected account using the relevant official guidance while preserving the facts needed to understand what happened.
Business groups are a second list of people
If profiles are organized in a business group, review that structure as well. Google’s business-group guidance distinguishes group roles from roles on individual profiles. A person can be invited directly to a profile without being a member of the group.
In Business Profile Manager, select the relevant group, then Group settings and Manage users. Use the group’s own controls and confirm the scope before changing a person’s access. Removing a user from one location should not be treated as proof that every separate permission has ended.
Group owners manage the group’s users. Group managers cannot add or remove group users, but they can add, edit and delete profiles in the group. That differs from a Manager on an individual Business Profile, who cannot remove that profile. The word manager therefore needs its context.
A group can have several owners and one primary owner. The primary group owner must transfer ownership before leaving. Do not delete the group to remove a person: that is a different operation with a wider effect.
How to check this yourself
Start by identifying the profile or group and the person whose responsibility is changing. Write down the intended outcome: remove a role, reduce a role, transfer primary ownership or stop managing your own profile. If you cannot yet identify the account or authorization, clarify it before making an irreversible change.
Then check your own role and any restrictions. Complete the appropriate permitted action and read the resulting access list. Confirm that the correct people still have access for the work the business needs.
Review relevant shared-account or group access separately. A visible reply remaining on the public profile does not prove that the former manager still has access, just as a missing reply does not prove the removal failed. Public content and account permissions answer different questions.
If the arrangement is unclear, a profile audit can help identify the access questions to resolve. Describe the profile and the handover problem without sending passwords, verification codes or private customer records. An assessment does not guarantee a disputed ownership transfer or replace the account owner’s security steps.

Frequently asked questions
how to remove user from google business profile
An owner can open the correct profile, select More, Business Profile settings, then People and access, choose the user and select Remove person. Confirm the person and your authority first. New-owner restrictions can prevent certain actions for seven days. Google says the removed user receives an email; their previous contributions remain on the profile.
how to remove access from google business profile
Remove the person’s authorized role through the appropriate profile or business-group controls. If they also used a shared Google Account, removing a different named user does not secure that account. Follow Google’s account-security guidance, including the relevant password, device and recovery checks. Review any separate access to other business systems with their authorized owner.
What happens to their replies and posts after you remove them
Google says their review replies, posts, comments and other actions remain on the Business Profile after the user is removed. Removing a role is not a rollback of earlier edits or a guarantee that all content stays visible forever. Removing profile content and managers is a different, destructive operation.
Can a manager remove another manager
Not on an individual Business Profile. Managers cannot add or remove other users, and only owners can change other users’ roles. Group managers also cannot add or remove users from the business group, although their powers over profiles in that group differ. Ask an appropriately authorized owner to handle the access change.
How do I remove myself from a profile
In People and access, select yourself, then Stop managing and Confirm. If you are the primary owner, transfer primary ownership to an appropriate other user first, subject to Google’s restrictions. Do not select Remove profile content and managers merely because you want to leave your own role.
The agency that manages our profile will not give it back
Google requires authorized representatives to respond to access requests promptly and transfer Business Profile ownership to the business owner immediately upon request. That obligation does not guarantee the outcome or timing of a disputed handover. Establish the actual roles and use the appropriate ownership-request or support route if ordinary cooperation fails; do not create a duplicate or seek another person’s password.
