What do Google Business Profile insights show?
Business Profile performance shows how people find and interact with your profile. It helps you identify questions worth investigating: are people discovering the business, trying to contact it, or looking for a route? It is not a complete record of your enquiries, visits or sales.
The distinction matters when the dashboard looks healthy but the business feels quiet. A person can press the call button without having a conversation. Someone can request directions and change their plans. A website click may lead to useful information, a booking, or an immediate exit. Read the event that was counted before deciding what it means for the business.
what do google business profile insights show
The main report is Performance. Google's performance guide describes discovery and interaction measures, with only applicable metrics displayed. It includes activity from organic results and Google Ads, so do not automatically describe a total as organic growth.
A separate Insights feature provides recommendations and is not available to every profile. A suggestion there is different from a recorded customer action. Keep the recommendation, the change you decide to make and the subsequent result separate in your notes.
Think of the report as a set of signals with different meanings, rather than one score for how well the business is run:
| What you are examining | Useful business question | Conclusion to avoid |
|---|---|---|
| Discovery and profile views | Are people encountering this location's information? | Everyone counted is a new prospective customer. |
| Calls and website clicks | Are people trying these contact routes? | Each action became a qualified enquiry. |
| Direction requests | Are people considering a journey to the premises? | Each request became an arrival. |
| Booking-related activity | What stage does this particular measure describe? | A hotel booking-link click is a completed reservation. |
| Product, menu or offer activity | Which available content attracts attention? | Interest in an item proves a purchase. |
You do not need every possible row to get useful information. Start with the actions that match how customers use this business. A takeaway, an appointment-based service and a hotel need different interpretations of activity, even when their profile view totals happen to match.
what does google business profile insights track
The name of the counter sets the boundary. Calls counts use of the call button; website clicks counts the website link. Directions records requests, not arrivals. None of those definitions establishes a successful conversation, completed appointment or payment.
Bookings is different from booking clicks: Google's completed-booking measure requires a booking provider, while booking clicks concerns hotel links. Before putting a booking figure into a report, identify which measure you actually have. A custom booking link and a connected provider should not be assumed to produce identical reporting.
The practical check is to compare like events. If your appointment records show fewer bookings than a link-click total, that difference is not automatically lost bookings or faulty reporting. You are comparing an earlier action with a later outcome. Some people investigate an option without reserving it; others return through a different route. These are possibilities to investigate, not explanations the dashboard has proved.
How to read Views without counting imaginary customers
Google describes daily deduplication and a limited allowance for visits across devices and platforms. Consequently, Views is neither a raw count of every glance nor a perfect cross-device headcount. It also concerns the profile, not all exposure to your business across Google.
This is why a view total should not become a sentence such as “we reached this many new customers.” A person may already know you, be checking opening hours, or be looking at more than one location. The report cannot assign those intentions to every viewer for you.
Use the same measure consistently when following a trend. If an email summary and the report show different totals, check their definitions and periods before deciding one is wrong. A larger number from a different surface is not necessarily a better version of the number you have been tracking.
Why search terms may seem slow to change
Search-term data updates monthly, rather than providing a live list for the current week. Check the represented period before treating an unchanged list as evidence of a problem.
The useful question is whether the phrases shown make sense for the business. A phrase can suggest that customers are trying to understand a particular service, but it is not an instruction to add an inaccurate category or insert unrelated wording. Nor does an absent phrase prove zero demand. Look for a pattern that you can test against the business's actual offering.
how to check google business profile performance
Performance requires a verified profile and the associated account. Owners and managers can use it. In Search, open Performance, select a period and choose Apply. In the Maps app, go to Business and select See more beside Performance before choosing the dates.
First confirm the location. With several branches, a familiar brand name is not enough: the address or location details need to match the report you intend to read. Then note the dates and the metric label. Those small checks prevent a convincing-looking comparison between different branches or periods.
For several profiles, Google's computer export route uses Business Profile Manager, profile selection and Actions → Insights, followed by a timeframe and Download Report. Keep an exported report with its period clearly identified. Do not assume an earlier year's figures are available just because a comparison would be useful; use the dates offered or a previously retained report.
If a control is missing, check the account, access, verification and surface before changing anything. If a metric is missing, consider applicability and its feature requirements. A missing bookings or menu row is not proof that somebody forgot to fill in a field. Adding invented information to make a counter appear would make the profile worse.
what are chat clicks on google business profile
Start with the report that uses the term. A label in an older export, a third-party dashboard and an available contact option on today's profile need not refer to the same event. Check its date and definition before interpreting it as a number of conversations.
Google ended the former Business Profile chat and call history on July 31, 2024. That did not mean customers lost every way to contact a business. Google separately documents text and WhatsApp contact options for claimed, verified profiles in eligible regions, with availability varying by profile.
The performance help page still lists Messages in terms of conversations, and the current contact-option guide points to performance metrics. Those statements do not justify relabelling an unexplained “chat clicks” counter as completed conversations. Keep the original label until its meaning is established. The retirement of the former chat also does not prove that every newer chat-related label is obsolete.
Even a conversation is not automatically a suitable enquiry. Someone may ask about a service you do not offer or reopen an existing discussion. To understand the business outcome, use the appropriate records outside the profile without exposing private message contents in a general performance report.
Choose contact options that the business can actually maintain. Adding a channel just to create another metric is not a useful objective. This does not require changing an established contact arrangement or promising a new response time.
A useful way to investigate a mismatch
Consider a hypothetical bicycle workshop whose profile views and call clicks rise, while the owner records fewer repair enquiries. The numbers identify a question, not a cause. The workshop first checks that the displayed number is its current business number and that its advertised services and hours are accurate. It then compares the same period with its own enquiry records.
Several findings would lead to different next steps. An incorrect number calls for a factual correction. Enquiries about a service the workshop does not offer call for clearer information. If the contact details and offering are accurate, the owner still should not claim that the view increase caused or prevented any bookings. The result may remain uncertain.
This example does not require copying personal customer records into a marketing spreadsheet. A summary of relevant enquiries can answer the business question without names, phone numbers or message transcripts. Sensitive services should be especially careful not to identify a visitor or imply a patient relationship in public reporting.
The useful conclusion might be modest: contact information checked, no factual error found, enquiry pattern worth following. That is better than declaring success from a view increase or declaring failure because two different counters do not match.
how to increase google business profile views
Aim to help suitable customers recognise an accurate business. Google's local ranking guidance describes relevance, distance and prominence, and does not offer a paid route to a better organic local position. Advertising is a separate activity; it should not be confused with buying that position.
Keep genuine business details current. Use relevant categories, representative photos and accurate opening hours, and respond helpfully to customer questions and reviews where those features are available. These are useful improvements to the information customers encounter, not a formula guaranteeing more views.
Avoid changing several accurate fields solely because a weekly graph falls. You may make the profile less clear while losing the ability to understand what changed. If you correct an error, record the correction and compare appropriate periods, allowing for changes in opening days, season or business activity. The comparison can suggest a relationship; it does not isolate the effect of that edit by itself.
A rise in attention is useful only in context. More people looking for something you do not supply is not the same as more suitable demand. Keep the question tied to the business: can customers understand what you offer, where you serve them and how to take the relevant next step?
How to check this yourself
Choose a single location and an available reporting period. Read the definitions of the measures relevant to your business and keep the labels with the figures. Separate recorded profile actions from outcomes recorded elsewhere.
Then choose one question. For example: are people using the contact route we expect, or are they looking for services we do not offer? Check the public information involved and compare the relevant business records without assuming that every difference is a fault.
If you compare periods, use matching definitions and account for obvious differences in the business's activity. Retain what is known and state what remains unexplained. Do not treat missing data as zero, a click as a sale, or a recommendation as proof that a change will work.
If you need help connecting the figures to the information customers see, a profile audit is a suitable next step. Start with the public profile link and the specific question you want answered. Do not send passwords or private customer records. An assessment cannot guarantee attribution, additional enquiries or a ranking change.

Frequently asked questions
what does google business profile insights show
Performance shows how people find and interact with your profile. Read each available measure separately: a call-button click is not a completed conversation, and a direction request is not an arrival. The report is useful for investigating customer interest, but it does not establish your total leads, revenue or the cause of a change.
what are chat clicks on google business profile
Do not assume that an old chat-click label means a current conversation count. The former Business Profile chat was discontinued, while eligible profiles can have text or WhatsApp contact options. Check the source, period and definition of the particular report. A click, a conversation and a qualified enquiry are different events.
how to check google business profile performance
For a verified profile, sign in with its associated managing account. In Search, open Performance, choose the period and apply it. In the Maps app, use Business, then See more beside Performance. Check the selected location and dates before comparing figures; only applicable metrics appear.
how to increase google business profile views
Keep the profile accurate and useful for the customers you can actually serve. Correct relevant business details, show representative photos and address genuine customer questions. Google does not sell a better organic local ranking. More profile views are not guaranteed and, on their own, do not prove that more suitable customers contacted you.
Why did the searches list not change this week
Google updates search-term data monthly, with a possible delay at the start of the month. An unchanged list is not a live statement about this week. Check which period is represented before drawing a conclusion, and do not treat a missing phrase as proof that nobody searched for it.
Does the views number count the same person twice
Do not treat Views as a perfect count of distinct individuals across every device and platform. Google describes daily deduplication but also allows limited counting across devices and Search or Maps. Repeat visits therefore do not translate directly into the displayed total, and that total is not your overall business audience on Google.
