How to remove a Google review someone posted

Published by Madloba Consult Published Updated

As the business owner, you cannot edit or delete a Google review someone else posted. You can report a suspected policy violation and use any eligible appeal, but Google decides the outcome. The author can change or delete their own review voluntarily. A refund or other remedy should not depend on that choice.

If one review is worrying you, begin with its actual words and the issue you want to address. A factual disagreement, private information, a suspected conflict of interest and a demand for money need different responses. The fact that a review is damaging does not establish which route applies.

For a suspected policy violation, the practical route is to report it and let Google assess it. That is not an instruction to delete, and it is not the only way a review can change. Google moderates content independently, and authors retain control over their own contributions.

Google's reporting guidance says not to report a review simply because you disagree with it or dislike it. The assessment concerns Google's rules, rather than whether the business approves of the opinion.

Read the review against the Maps content policy. Possible concerns include fake engagement, a relevant conflict of interest, harassment or prohibited personal information. These are different grounds; choose the one supported by the content and facts.

Do not reduce genuine experience to a completed purchase. Someone may have contacted or visited a business without buying. An unfamiliar profile name, a missing booking record or an account with few contributions does not prove that the review is fabricated. A public contributor profile is not an identity check or a customer database.

A hypothetical example: a disputed appointment

Suppose a salon review says an appointment started late. The owner believes the agreed time was different. That disagreement alone does not establish a policy violation. The owner can check the appointment process privately and consider whether a brief response would help future readers.

Now suppose the same review also publishes another person's private medical information. The privacy issue deserves separate assessment; it is not necessary to settle the disagreement about the appointment first. Report the actual concern without repeating the sensitive information in a public rebuttal.

Neither example predicts Google's decision. They show why the policy ground matters more than the star rating.

how to delete google reviews posted by others

There is no business-owner delete control for another person's customer review. Being an owner or manager does not make you the author of that contribution. Deleting or editing your own response changes your response, not the review above it.

Person or organization Relevant action Limit
Review author Edit or delete their own contribution The choice belongs to them
Business owner or manager Reply where eligible; report a suspected violation; use an eligible appeal Cannot guarantee or directly perform deletion of someone else's review
Google Moderate content and assess reports or appeals A report is not an order to remove
Another Maps user Report a genuine concern through Maps Additional reports do not establish that the content violates policy

Google's Maps review help explains how an author finds their contributions and uses Edit review or Delete review. They need to use their own account. Do not ask for their login, take over their device or perform a deletion on their behalf.

If a customer asks how to change their contribution, you can point them to the official help. Keep assistance separate from pressure: they do not owe the business a revision after a complaint is addressed. An edit may change the displayed review date, but a date change alone is not evidence that a particular reply caused the change.

Before reporting, keep the review's public link and enough factual context to identify the concern. Check that you are looking at the correct location and review. Avoid collecting unrelated personal information or writing a public accusation about who you believe the author is.

Google documents this Business Profile route:

  1. Open the correct Business Profile using the associated account.
  2. Select Read reviews.
  3. Choose Report beside the review concerned.
  4. Select the reason that actually fits the issue.
  5. Select Send report.

The Reviews Management Tool is another documented route for reporting and checking decisions. Confirm that the displayed account and business are correct before using it.

Submission does not establish removal. Do not promise that the review will immediately disappear, or interpret continued visibility as proof that the report was ignored. Google describes evaluation as typically taking several days, not a fixed deadline for every case.

People can also report genuine concerns through Maps under Google's content-reporting guidance. Do not turn that option into a campaign asking friends or staff to report content they cannot substantiate. The aim is an accurate report, not a manufactured appearance of agreement.

What happens after you press Send report

Check the status of the report in the Reviews Management Tool. Google's documented labels include Decision pending, Report reviewed – no policy violation and Escalated – check your email for updates. Each describes a stage or result of the reporting process; it does not give you an independent delete permission.

If Google finds no violation, inspect the available appeal options. A one-time appeal is available for eligible reviews. Use the relevant policy and factual context, rather than repeating that the review is upsetting. Do not assume that every decision is eligible or that an appeal must succeed.

Google can leave a compliant review live. Its guidance also recognizes mistaken removal of legitimate reviews, and the content-reporting policy reserves the ability to restore or remove content. Avoid presenting removal as an irreversible guarantee or promising permanent suppression of a review.

Keep the outcome distinct from the underlying service issue. You can address an established mistake without waiting for Google to settle every disagreement, and a report result does not prove what happened between the business and the customer.

When the review is honest and you still want it gone

An honest negative account is not removable merely because it is critical. Equally, a genuine experience does not exempt a review from other content rules. Assess any specific concern on its own merits, without promising either automatic removal or permanent visibility.

Where a response would help, use it to give useful context and acknowledge an established problem. Under Google's reply guidance, replying requires verification and appropriate profile access. Review availability also depends on business category and country or region. Replies are checked before publication; submitting one does not mean it is already visible.

A reply can invite a private conversation through the business's normal channel. Do not publicly confirm that a person was a patient or confidential client, quote their records or demand proof of identity in a public exchange. Address sensitive details privately and only where appropriate.

Google notifies the reviewer when you reply, and they can still change their review. That is a possibility, not a conversion tactic or a promise. The purpose of your response is to handle the concern responsibly, even if the reviewer never changes a word.

Can I offer a refund so the customer removes the review?

A refund should not be a trade for deleting criticism. Google's policy prohibits incentives in exchange for review changes or removal, including payments, discounts and free goods or services. Do not require a screenshot proving deletion before providing a remedy that is otherwise due.

In a hypothetical restaurant complaint, the business may decide that a charged item was not supplied and correct that charge. It should do so because of the billing issue, independently of the review. The customer remains free to leave, edit or delete their contribution. This example does not set refund terms or determine legal entitlements.

Avoid bargaining over a star rating, asking the customer to replace their words with yours, or threatening consequences if they decline. A private conversation should not become pressure merely because other readers cannot see it.

The doors that do not lead to removal

Removing a Business Profile from your account is not a review reset. Google's account-removal guidance says that removing profile content and managers removes owner and manager material, including replies, while user-generated reviews remain. The business may still appear publicly. Removing only your own access is different and does not remove the profile content.

Requesting removal of a place from Maps is also different. Google's place-removal guidance concerns a business that never existed or is ineligible. Do not delete an operating profile, falsely mark a business closed or misstate eligibility in an attempt to erase criticism.

A legal concern has its own route. Google's legal reporting page covers content believed to violate the law or legal rights and describes assessment of the request. This is separate from a routine policy report, and does not guarantee removal. Whether a statement infringes a legal right depends on the facts and applicable law; a harsh opinion alone is not enough to make that determination here.

A demand for money to remove reviews

If a demand for money or another benefit accompanies threats involving negative reviews, check Google's review-extortion guidance. Google advises against engaging with or paying the malicious individuals and provides a specific reporting route.

Preserve the relevant demands and review links for that route, with sensitive information handled privately. Do not fabricate a threat to qualify for it or treat an ordinary customer's disputed complaint as extortion without supporting facts. Using the route does not guarantee a removal decision or a completion date.

How to check this yourself

Start with one review and identify the actual concern. Read the relevant policy, then separate what the public content shows from what you know privately and what remains uncertain. Do not use a profile name as proof of identity.

If there is a supported policy concern, make an accurate report and keep its reference or status. If you already reported it, check the decision and any eligible appeal instead of assuming repeated submissions will improve the result. If the issue concerns a legal right or an extortion demand, use the appropriate guidance for that specific situation.

Independently, decide what useful action the business can take. It may be a brief reply, a private correction of an established mistake or a change to the service process. Leave the author's review decision with them.

There is no owner delete control for someone else's customer review. Its author can edit or delete their own contribution, while Google moderates content and decides reports. Deleting your own reply is a different action and does not delete the review.

how to remove google reviews posted by others

Assess each review against the relevant policy and report a genuine concern through Google's reporting route. Do not report criticism merely because you dislike it or ask others to submit unsupported complaints. Author changes and Google's moderation are separate from your report.

Can the person who wrote the review delete it

Yes. Google Maps lets authors edit or delete their own reviews through the account they used. The choice belongs to the author. Do not seek access to that account or offer a reward, refund condition or other pressure in exchange for changing or deleting the review.

Does deleting my Business Profile delete the reviews

Removing profile content and managers from your account does not erase customer reviews. Owner and manager material, including replies, is removed, while the business may still appear on Search and Maps. Removing only your own access is a different action and does not remove profile content.

Can I offer a refund so the customer removes the review

Do not make a refund conditional on changing or removing a review. Google prohibits incentives for review changes or removal. Address a legitimate complaint on its merits, independently of the review; the customer can then decide what to do with their contribution.
