How to edit your Google Business Profile description

Published by Madloba Consult Published Updated

Open your Business Profile, select Edit profile, then Edit beside Description. Enter your text and save. The limit is 750 characters. Use the Google Account linked to the profile and complete any verification Google requires before you can make the change.

The writing decision matters as much as finding the field. A description should tell someone what this business actually does. It should not leave them guessing whether you offer the service they need, and it should not promise something your team cannot provide. Before replacing the current paragraph, identify the particular fact or gap you want to correct.

How to edit Google Business Profile description

Google's description instructions lead to the Description field through Edit profile. On a phone, the Maps app provides Business and then Edit profile; features can differ by device and between Search and Maps. Use the description control offered on your profile rather than trying to edit a sentence directly on the public result.

Check the business name and location before saving, especially if your account manages several branches. A useful paragraph for one branch may be inaccurate for another. Read the existing text first so you do not accidentally remove a distinction customers still need, such as the kind of service provided at that location.

If the controls are missing, confirm which account you are using and whether it manages this profile. Google says some businesses need verification before they can change their information. Follow the actual prompt rather than treating the missing field as proof of an ownership problem. The general editing guidance explains access and the Search/Maps routes.

Keep a copy of the wording you intend to save. That gives you something specific to compare with the field and the public result later. It is more useful than remembering that the paragraph looked different, particularly when several people are authorised to maintain the business information.

What should the description say?

Start with the service or product a customer is looking for. Then add a detail that makes the scope clear: the type of customer you serve, the work you specialise in, or a relevant feature of the business. Include history only when it is known and useful. A missing founding date is a reason to leave it out, not to estimate one.

For a hypothetical bicycle workshop, a factual draft might read:

We repair and service commuter bicycles, including brakes, gears and punctures. Our workshop also stocks replacement tyres and everyday cycling accessories. Customers can discuss the work needed before arranging a repair.

It works only if each detail is true for the workshop. If the business does not sell accessories, that sentence should go. If it does not accept every type of bicycle, specify the relevant scope instead of letting a broad claim create the wrong expectation.

Compare that with a paragraph made entirely of superlatives. Words such as exceptional or leading do little to explain whether a repair is available. Replace them with useful facts rather than simply choosing less enthusiastic adjectives. You can sound welcoming without turning an unverified claim into a promise.

A slogan can be part of a business's voice, but it should not crowd out the answer to what the business does. Read the draft as someone unfamiliar with the brand. If the slogan is the only sentence, add the information a first-time customer needs. There is no requirement to fill every available character.

How long can the description be, and what should you leave out?

Google sets a 750-character limit. This is not a word allowance. Check the complete text, including spaces and punctuation, rather than judging its length by the number of lines in a document. A paragraph that fits on a large screen can still exceed the field limit.

Google's description rules require relevant, honest information and exclude distracting or low-quality content. The description must not contain links or focus on promotions, prices and sales. The field guidance also excludes URLs and HTML. The description is optional, so padding it to reach the maximum is unnecessary.

Put the business website in the appropriate website field. Do not disguise a URL as spaced-out text to squeeze it into the description. Similarly, a paragraph about the business should not become a temporary discount announcement. Keeping the description focused also avoids leaving an expired offer in text people may read later.

When shortening a draft, remove repetition before removing a useful distinction. A workshop's repair scope is more helpful than saying three times that the team values quality. If a detail changes frequently, decide whether it belongs in a dedicated field that can be maintained accurately instead of copying it into several places.

For clinics or other sensitive services, describe the service rather than an identifiable person's experience. A business description is not the place to mention a patient's appointment or a client's private situation. A fictional writing exercise should remain separate from the real paragraph you intend to publish.

How to update Google Business Profile description

Use the same Description field to replace outdated wording. You do not need a new profile because a paragraph needs revising. For example, if a hypothetical repair business has stopped offering home visits, remove that claim and explain the service it currently provides. Do not leave the old promise in place merely because it sounds attractive.

After saving, check the status of the edit. Google's description guidance says changes usually appear in about 10 minutes but can take up to 30 days. That is published platform guidance, not a promised completion time for your particular change. It also does not tell you why an individual edit is still pending.

Google distinguishes accepted, pending and not-approved edits in its edit-status guidance. If a change is not approved, compare the submitted wording with the rules and the status shown. Correct a specific problem you can identify. Do not assume that an old public paragraph proves the new one was rejected, or that a particular adjective caused the decision without evidence.

If the status and the visible result remain inconsistent, record the text, the relevant status and where you see the mismatch. Those details make a support question clearer. Avoid repeatedly replacing an accurate paragraph with speculative variations simply because publication is not immediate.

Can you use Google's AI description suggestion?

Google offers Suggest description to eligible users in selected regions and languages. The feature requires users to be at least 18 and comply with Google's generative AI prohibited use policy. Where available, you can request another result with Try again, choose Use, edit the wording and save. Google asks you to check accuracy.

Treat the suggestion as a draft. It may draw on profile information and other sources such as the website. An outdated service on the website is worth correcting at its source; accepting a polished sentence does not establish that the service still exists. If the feature is absent, you can write the description yourself rather than looking for a way around its availability limits.

Read any suggested sentence as a factual claim. Does the business really provide that service? Is the stated qualification documented? Has someone confirmed a claimed history? Remove what you cannot support. This check also applies to a draft written by a person: confident language is not evidence.

You do not need to give a writing tool customer records to explain what the business does. Use the business's public, approved facts. Keep the final decision with someone who knows the actual offering, including limitations that an attractive generic paragraph might overlook.

How to edit highlights on Google Business Profile

First identify what you mean by highlights. If you mean factual details such as amenities or payment options, look for attributes. In Google's attribute instructions, the route is Edit profile, More, then Edit for the relevant category. Change an available Yes or No option and save.

Availability depends on location, country and business category, and names can change. Some attributes reflect customer input. You cannot assume every detail on another business's profile is a switch available on yours. A review-derived topic or a short editorial sentence is not the Description field either.

Answer factual options on the basis of what is actually offered. For example, a cafe considering an outdoor-seating attribute should confirm that customers can really use that seating. Writing the phrase into the description does not itself change the attribute. Equally, changing an attribute does not rewrite an outdated sentence elsewhere.

If an option is unavailable or a displayed detail seems wrong, identify the type of information before choosing a remedy. Do not change the business category solely to obtain a particular highlight. Start with accurate representation of the business, then investigate the specific mismatch.

Why does Google show a different description than the one you wrote?

A profile can display several kinds of short text. Google's business-summary guidance distinguishes a business's own description, editorial summaries and review snippets. Editing your paragraph does not give you control over the other two.

Editorial summaries cannot be edited like the business description. Review snippets are selected from review material, and their presentation can vary. Compare the location and label of the text with your Description field before concluding that someone replaced your writing. Also check whether your own edit has been accepted.

Google provides reporting for summaries associated with an unrelated place and editorial summaries describing services the business does not offer. In the Maps app, use More beside the summary, then Report summary, select the reason and submit. Google does not remove a summary merely because it is unclear or negative. Reporting is a request for review, not a guaranteed deletion.

For example, if a summary describes a service your business has never offered, preserve the exact wording and identify the mismatch. If the problem is simply that your own description still lists a discontinued service, edit that field. These are different tasks, even when the sentences appear close together on the same screen.

Check the result and choose the next action

Read the saved paragraph and the relevant public description. Check the business and branch, the factual claims, the character limit, and whether any URL or promotional wording slipped in. If the new text is pending, keep that status separate from a public check that still shows the earlier version.

Ask someone who knows the business to read the paragraph for accuracy, and someone unfamiliar with it to explain what they think is offered. These are useful writing checks, not proof that the description will improve rankings or enquiries. Clear text helps a reader understand the business; it does not establish a measurable commercial result by itself.

Keep the next action specific. You may need to correct one service claim, resolve access, wait for a pending edit while checking its status, or report a qualifying summary error. A complete rewrite is not necessary when the problem is a single outdated fact.

If you need help distinguishing the profile's text fields or checking consistency, discuss a profile audit with Madloba Consult. Describe the mismatch and agree the scope before any changes. This article belongs to the Profile guide.

Open the profile with the account authorised to manage it, choose Edit profile, then Edit beside Description. Update the text and save. Complete verification if Google requires it, and check the edit status before assuming the public description has changed.

how to edit highlights on google business profile

If you mean factual attributes, use Edit profile, More, then the relevant attribute category. Change the available Yes or No options and save. Availability depends on location and business category; some attributes come from customer input. A review snippet or editorial summary is a different object.

How long can a Google Business Profile description be

The limit is 750 characters, not 750 words. Count spaces and punctuation as part of your draft, and check the field before saving. You do not need to fill the limit: use the space for accurate details that help someone understand the business.

Can I put my website address in the description

No. Google does not allow links in the description. Put an eligible business website in the separate website field. Removing a URL from the description does not remove or change the website link elsewhere on the profile.

Why does Google show a different description than the one I wrote

First identify the text you are looking at. Maps can show the business description, an editorial summary or review-derived text. Editing Description does not rewrite the others. Also check the status of your own edit; a different sentence alone does not prove either a rejection or an unauthorised change.

Do I have to be verified to edit the description

Google says some businesses must verify before they can change their information. Sign in with the linked account and follow any verification requirement shown for your profile. Do not use an available editing control as proof that verification is complete, or a missing control as proof of one particular cause.
