how to change categories on google business profile

Published by Madloba Consult Published Updated

Open Edit profile, edit Business category, select an appropriate option from Google’s list and save. Choose the core business first, then only relevant additional categories. Check the edit status and any verification request before treating the change as complete.

The difficult part is often deciding what should change. A business can offer several services while still having one clear main activity. If the primary category describes a small speciality instead of that activity, adding more categories may leave the central problem unresolved.

Start by describing the business without looking at a competitor's profile. What would a customer say they were visiting? What can they actually obtain there? Those questions help distinguish an accurate correction from an attempt to appear for every possible search. A category should not promise a service the business is not equipped to provide.

how to edit categories in google business profile

Google's category instructions use Edit profile → Business category → Edit. Enter a choice under Primary category, select it from the offered list and Save. You cannot create your own category. Additions and edits may require verification again.

Use the account associated with the correct profile. If you manage multiple locations, confirm the location before editing: a valid choice for one branch may describe another poorly. Do not use a category change as a test of whether your account has permission.

In the Maps app, Google's general editing route starts with Business, then Edit profile. Search and Maps controls may differ by operating system. Some profiles require verification before changes can be made; a missing control alone does not explain why it is missing.

After submitting, read the status. Google's edit-status guidance distinguishes Accepted, Pending and Not approved. A pending edit is still being reviewed; a rejected edit may need an accuracy issue resolved and may be eligible for appeal. Do not interpret an unchanged public label as proof that nothing was saved.

Keep the intended correction clear. If a name or address is also wrong, establish those facts separately rather than changing everything in the hope that one edit unlocks another. That makes it easier to understand any response Google gives you.

how to choose google business profile category

Google recommends a specific accurate primary choice, or a broader suitable one if the exact category is unavailable. Additional choices should describe relevant activities, not every product. Separately owned and operated public-facing departments should have their own eligible profiles rather than lending their categories to yours. See the category guidance.

The representation guidelines make the distinction between what a business is and an attribute it has. They call for few categories that describe the core activity, rather than using categories solely as search keywords. This does not mean every business with several genuine activities must choose only one.

For a hypothetical example, imagine a repair workshop that offers a narrow specialist service alongside its main repair work. The specialist label might sound more attractive, but the owner should ask whether it describes the main business a visitor will encounter. If it does not, it may be unsuitable as the primary category even when the service itself is real.

A useful comparison is between the proposed label and the actual offer. Look at what the staff and equipment support, how the business describes its activity to customers, and whether someone arriving for that category would be in the right place. Do not infer the correct answer solely from a few recent enquiries or the most profitable service.

What if the right category is missing?

Work with an accurate broader option from the available list. Use the description and appropriate service information to explain the detail that the category does not convey. Inventing an unrelated category would give the customer less accurate information, not a more precise account of the business.

For example, a workshop may specialize in a particular material while the category list offers only its broader trade. The description can explain that specialization without pretending the workshop is a different kind of business. Check that any service you describe is actually available; specificity is useful only when it is true.

Competitor profiles can raise questions about terminology, but they cannot settle your eligibility. A nearby business may have a different operation, a different scope or an inaccurate profile. Copying its list would import assumptions you have not checked.

Common mistakes we see

In our practice, distinguishing the main business from an attractive speciality is a useful starting point. In our work, we have observed a change in the searches associated with a profile after correcting its primary category. That is an observation from the work, not a controlled test proving the category alone caused the change or a promise about another business.

A few practical checks help keep the decision grounded:

  • Make the primary category describe the core business rather than the service you most want to promote.
  • Check each additional choice against something the business genuinely provides.
  • Keep categories separate from attributes, facilities and individual products.
  • Do not borrow the category of a neighbouring or independently operated business.
  • Resolve uncertainty about the business first instead of repeatedly switching labels.

Avoid making a permanent identity decision from a temporary scheduling problem. A fully booked week does not necessarily mean the business has stopped providing a service. Conversely, a service that has ended should not remain represented as an available activity. Establish which situation applies before removing a category.

There is also a difference between identifying the primary activity and claiming that the order of every additional category has a proven ranking effect. The primary choice has a defined role. Do not turn an internal preference for arranging the rest into a Google rule or an optimization guarantee.

how many categories google business profile

Google's current editing documentation allows a primary category and up to nine additional categories. The limit does not override the requirement for relevance. You do not need to fill unused slots simply because the editor permits them.

Consider whether each proposed addition helps identify a real part of this business. Two businesses with different operations may need different numbers of categories. Comparing the length of their lists tells you little about which list is accurate.

An independently run café inside another business illustrates a different question. The issue is who operates it and whether it qualifies for its own profile, not whether the host has room for one more category. Do not merge two operators' identities just because customers enter through the same building.

For a chain or multiple locations, Google's representation guidelines also contain consistency rules. Locations offering the same service should not receive arbitrary different primary descriptions solely to pursue different searches. Genuine differences in business types or operations need to be established before assuming that every location should be identical or different.

how to add categories in google business profile

Use Add another category in the same editor, select an available option and save. To remove an additional choice, use its Remove control, then save. These are the documented controls; the important decision remains whether the resulting list is accurate.

Before adding a choice, identify what it contributes that the existing list does not explain. A new product on a shelf is not automatically a new kind of business. If the question is about an individual offering, Google's services editor may be more appropriate where available. It supports suggested and custom services for certain categories, with separate details such as descriptions and prices.

Categories can also affect which profile features are available. Google's category page gives examples involving hotel amenities, restaurant information and health or beauty services. These are possible features, not an invitation to select an inaccurate category to obtain a button. Other eligibility and availability conditions may still apply.

If a desired field is absent, establish the real category and the feature's requirements. Do not add an unrelated category and treat the appearance of a new control as proof that the business qualifies. The customer still needs an honest description of what is offered.

What a category change does and does not do

Google says categories affect local ranking. Its local-ranking explanation also describes relevance, distance and prominence. A corrected category is therefore one part of a broader picture, not a control for selecting a position.

No documented category-editing route lets an owner pay for or request a better local ranking. A competitor being above you does not establish that its category is the only cause. Distance, the search and other circumstances can differ. Likewise, a single before-and-after search does not isolate the effect of your edit.

Evaluate the factual result first: did the intended category become accepted, does it describe the business and do the related services remain accurate? If you later assess performance, keep track of other changes and avoid claiming a causal result from one observation. There is no universal waiting period after which a category experiment becomes conclusive.

Verification and reviews

If Google asks for verification, follow the profile's current instructions. The verification guidance says Google determines the available methods. A category edit does not guarantee a particular method or immediate completion, and a verification request is not itself evidence of wrongdoing.

Category can matter to review availability. Google's school policy removes existing reviews and disables new ratings and reviews for affected profiles primarily categorized as general-education institutions serving students aged 6–18. It explicitly excludes institutions outside that general-education scope, such as universities, day care centres and swim schools.

If that classification does not describe the business, Google directs owners to correct the category. That is a factual correction, not a way for an affected school to evade the policy. Do not promise that selecting another label will restore previous reviews.

Other reviews can be missing for other reasons. A count changing after a category edit does not establish that the edit caused the loss. Check the actual profile, applicable policy and status before drawing that conclusion or repeatedly changing categories in an attempt to recover reviews.

How to check this yourself

Start with a plain description of the core business and compare it with the existing primary category. Read the additional choices as well; the public label alone does not tell you the whole saved list. Ask the person responsible for the operation to resolve any factual uncertainty.

Choose the smallest useful set of accurate options. If an exact choice is unavailable, consider a suitable broader category and explain the offering through appropriate fields. Distinguish a separate operator from a department of your own business, and a temporary availability issue from a discontinued activity.

After an authorized edit, read the status and any verification request. Check the public result without treating one device or search result as a complete picture. Keep a short record of what changed so a later problem can be assessed against facts rather than recollection.

If the main activity or category choice remains unclear, our Google Maps work can help assess the profile and the questions that need resolving. Describe the actual business through the contact page, without passwords, codes or private customer records. Approval, review restoration and a particular ranking cannot be promised in advance.

how to choose google business profile category

Choose the most specific available category that accurately describes the core business. If the exact choice is unavailable, use a suitable broader category. A speciality you would like to promote is not necessarily the best description of the whole business.

how many categories google business profile

Google currently documents one primary category and up to nine additional categories. That is a maximum, not a target. Add only relevant choices; a shorter accurate list is preferable to filling every slot with loosely related activities.

how to add categories in google business profile

how to edit categories in google business profile

Use the same Business category editor for changes to the primary or additional choices. In the Maps app, Business leads to Edit profile; controls can vary by device. Use authorized access to the correct location and check the result after saving.

Will I have to verify my business again after changing a category?

Possibly. Google warns that category additions or edits can require verification again. The method and circumstances depend on the actual profile. A verification request does not, by itself, prove that the chosen category was wrong.

Can changing a category affect my reviews?

Category can affect review availability, including Google’s specific policy for general-education institutions serving ages 6–18. That does not mean every category edit deletes reviews. Identify the applicable policy and actual profile state before attributing missing reviews to the change.
