How to transfer Google Business Profile ownership
Only the primary owner can transfer primary ownership to an existing owner or manager. Confirm the recipient's accepted access and any new-user restriction, then change the primary role in People and access. Keep the existing profile and check the resulting access instead of deleting it or sharing a password.
A sale, a departing colleague and a change of agency can all produce the same question: who should control the business on Google now? They do not necessarily require the same change. Someone helping with reviews may need Manager access; someone taking responsibility for the business may need primary ownership. Agree which situation applies before selecting a role.
The useful outcome is not merely a confirmation on the sender's screen. The right person should be able to identify the right business in their own account, and both sides should understand any remaining access. That is a practical handover check, not a substitute for the business's contractual arrangements.
how to transfer ownership of google business profile
Google's primary-ownership instructions give this route for the current primary owner:
- Open the correct Business Profile.
- Select More, then Business Profile settings and People and access.
- Select the existing user who should receive primary ownership.
- Next to Access, select Edit.
- Choose Primary owner, then Save.
The recipient must already be an owner or manager. If they are not, first arrange an invitation and acceptance through the owners and managers settings. A pending invitation is not a completed handover. Confirm the intended account rather than relying only on the person's display name.
Google applies seven-day restrictions to specified actions for new owners and managers, including primary-ownership transfers, removing other users and deleting or undeleting profiles. A newly accepted invitation therefore does not promise an immediate transfer. These are specific restrictions, not a ban on every activity or a guarantee that every other feature will work immediately.
For example, imagine a café changing owners while continuing as the same business. The buyer has never had access to its profile. The seller should establish the correct recipient and arrange access before treating the profile handover as finished. Discovering a waiting restriction at the final meeting does not make a duplicate listing or a shared password an appropriate solution.
If a control is missing, first check the account, exact profile, recorded role and relevant status. A public place page alone does not prove that another person owns it. Avoid sending another invitation or creating another listing until you know what the existing account can actually access.
how to change owner of google business profile
Distinguish an ordinary Owner from the primary owner. A profile can have several owners, with one holding primary ownership. Owners can change other users' access roles; the primary handover is reserved for the current primary owner. Manager access covers substantial day-to-day work but does not include managing other users or removing the individual profile.
The choice should follow responsibility. A temporary helper does not need ownership simply because they need to answer customer questions. Conversely, a new business owner should not assume that a Manager invitation settles who controls the profile. Discuss the intended result in plain terms: who will be accountable for the business, who will help, and who will leave?
Do not assume the previous person's access has disappeared after a role change. Read the resulting access list and agree whether continued involvement is intended. If the primary owner wants to leave, they must hand over that role first. Google's individual-access instructions describe Stop managing for a person's own exit and explain that their past contributions remain.
This matters when a former employee is helping for a short transition. Keeping them involved may be appropriate, but it should be a conscious arrangement rather than an unnoticed consequence. Equally, an unfamiliar account is a reason to ask who it belongs to, not automatic proof of misuse.
how to transfer a google business profile
First identify the kind of transfer. A cooperative handover between people uses the primary-role change above. Moving a profile into a business group and requesting ownership from another account have different routes.
Moving profiles into a business group
Google's business-group guidance describes Business Profile Manager: select the profiles, then Actions, Transfer businesses, choose the destination group and Transfer. You can transfer profiles only to a group you own or manage.
This is not the Group settings, Manage users screen: that screen concerns people in the group. Nor should a move into a group be treated as proof that the intended individual now has primary ownership. Check the actual operation and responsibility involved.
Group access reaches current and future profiles placed in the group. A hypothetical company handing over one branch should therefore check the destination carefully. Giving someone access to the whole group could include branches outside the agreed work. For a business with several locations, the important question is which locations the arrangement covers, not just whether an invitation was accepted.
When the current owner cannot hand it over
For an already verified profile managed by someone else, an authorized business owner can follow Google's ownership-request process. Storefront and hybrid businesses use business.google.com/add to find the existing business and request access. Service-area businesses without a physical shop or office are directed to support for Transfer ownership of listing.
Google notifies the current owner and gives them three days to respond. Approval, denial and no response lead to different next steps. After no response, claiming may be offered, but that option is not always available. A denial can be appealed where applicable. Do not translate the response period into a guaranteed date for obtaining access.
If an agency manages the profile, Google's authorized-representative guidance requires cooperation with the business owner's access and ownership requests. That obligation does not make an outside adviser able to bypass Google's checks. Keep the request factual and identify the business concerned.
An unclaimed existing profile is another situation again. Resolve the status of that profile rather than creating a replacement because the first route was inconvenient. For a more detailed explanation of an unavailable owner, see requesting access to a Business Profile.
how to transfer reviews google my business
An ordinary ownership handover keeps the existing profile; it is not an export of selected reviews. Google says transferring primary ownership helps maintain business information, including reviews. The buyer is taking over responsibility for the same profile, not selecting which parts of its reputation to inherit.
There are also separate circumstances in which reviews can move between profiles. Google's review-transfer guidance describes qualifying changes, possible automatic moves and support requests after an unintended duplicate was created and verified because of an ownership or location change. It specifically advises against creating a new profile just because ownership or location changed.
The same guidance says reviews remain when management changes but the business keeps its name. A new owner cannot treat old criticism as removable merely because it concerns an earlier team. Significant business changes have separate considerations; not every change qualifies for moving or removing reviews. Explain the actual continuity of the business rather than assuming any sale means a clean review history.
Review visibility also has causes unrelated to a handover. If something appears missing, note what changed and distinguish the transfer from another operation before assigning a cause. Do not assume that a difference in the count proves the seller deleted reviews or that reversing access will restore them.
Remove profile content and managers is not an ownership transfer. Google's removal guidance describes permanent loss of owner and manager content, including replies, through that separate operation. Leaving individual access preserves past contributions; removing profile content does not. Read the operation's scope before using anything labelled remove.
The new team may want to reply to older feedback with accurate information about an improvement. Google's review guidance requires verification for replies, and availability depends on category and country or region. A role change alone does not guarantee a Reply control or publication of a response. For private services, avoid confirming that a reviewer was a client or disclosing details of their visit.
What should be agreed before the handover?
Agree which business and account are involved, who should take responsibility and whether the outgoing person will retain any role. Keep access to one profile separate from broader group access and from access to the website or other services. A Business Profile role change is not evidence that those other arrangements have changed too.
In our practice, important profile changes are agreed in writing so both sides can refer to the same decision. That is a working principle, not an extra Google requirement. A clear note about the intended handover is more useful than a vague instruction to change everything.
Use each person's own account instead of circulating the owner's password. Before a recipient acts, confirm that they understand which changes have been agreed. A new owner may need to correct opening hours immediately, but should still check whether the business details they plan to publish are accurate.
Consider a hypothetical shop that keeps its name and location after a sale. Its new owner wants the profile to show a revised phone number. The ownership change and the phone correction are separate facts to establish. Combining them with a new listing and wholesale rewriting would make it harder to understand what had changed and why.
How to check this yourself
- Identify the exact existing profile and the account holding primary ownership.
- Agree whether the intended change is an individual handover, ordinary role change, group move or ownership request.
- Confirm the recipient's accepted access and any applicable new-user restriction.
- Read back the resulting role and scope after the authorized change. Check the recipient's account without making an unnecessary public edit as a test.
- Agree whether the outgoing person should remain involved. Keep individual exit separate from removing profile content.
- Check the public information against the facts of the business. If a review or reply appears missing, identify the actual operation and status instead of assuming the transfer caused it.
If ownership or access remains unclear, an audit can help establish the questions that need resolving. Describe the situation through the contact page, without passwords or verification codes. The next step depends on the actual profile and authority involved; access or a transfer outcome cannot be promised in advance.

Only the primary owner can transfer primary ownership to an existing owner or manager. In People and access, select that person, edit Access, choose Primary owner and save. An invitation must be accepted first, and new-user restrictions can prevent an immediate transfer.
how to change owner on google business profile
Adding an ordinary Owner and transferring primary ownership are different changes. Owners can change other users’ access roles, but only the primary owner can hand over the primary role. Confirm which responsibility the business actually intends to transfer.
how to transfer reviews google my business
An ownership handover keeps the existing profile rather than exporting its reviews. Google also describes qualifying situations in which reviews can move between profiles, sometimes through support. A new owner cannot choose to leave criticism behind simply because management changed.
how do i transfer a google business profile
Identify whether this is a cooperative primary-owner handover, a move into a business group or a request for ownership from someone else. Those routes have different permissions and conditions. Do not delete the profile or create a replacement to avoid resolving access.
how to transfer google my business profile
Google My Business is the former name of Business Profile. For an individual profile, use its People and access settings to transfer the primary role. Business Profile Manager also provides group tools for multiple locations; a group move is a separate operation.
What the previous primary owner can still do afterwards
Do not assume a transfer has removed the previous person’s access. Check the resulting roles and agree whether they should remain. A primary owner must transfer that role before using Stop managing; ordinary user removal preserves their past profile contributions.
