Local visibility

Yes, nearby branches can appear for overlapping local searches because Google ranks local results by relevance, distance and prominence for each searcher. A gain for one branch does not automatically mean the company gained more customers overall: some enquiries may be new to the network, while others may have shifted from a nearby branch. Measure branch results and network totals together. Google’s local-ranking guidance explains why branch visibility can differ by searcher location; it does not provide a metric for internal demand redistribution between branches.

For a seasonal business, the same period last year is often the more useful baseline for deciding whether a decline is unusual, while the previous month or previous period helps show short-term direction. Use both when possible. Google Search Console supports date-range comparisons and recommends weekly or monthly granularity for longer-term trends; Google Trends provides historical comparison lines, including same-period-last-year options for several ranges. Neither tool proves that a visibility change caused a sales change. Keep the query, location, page set and metric as comparable as possible before calling a seasonal fall a visibility problem.

First check what is actually rising. Google Business Profile reports interaction metrics such as website clicks, direction requests and call-button clicks; these are not all confirmed enquiries. Google’s Calls metric counts clicks on the call button, not connected calls. Booking data is only available in supported booking setups and is a separate downstream event. If real enquiries are rising but bookings are flat, separate lead quality from handling after first contact: whether the customer reached the business, whether the request matched the service, whether an appointment or offer was available, and whether the customer actually booked. Do not buy more promotion until you know which step is failing.

Two people can see different local results because Google uses search context, including location, language, device and sometimes personalization. For local results, Google says relevance, distance and prominence are the main factors, and distance is calculated from the searcher’s location when no location is stated. Being in the same city does not mean two searches use the same precise or estimated location. Compare visibility using the same query, place, device/language conditions and repeated observations instead of treating one personal search as proof that the business has gained or lost visibility.

Small business reputation management is not one cleanup task. Keep the Business Profile accurate, ask for genuine reviews without incentives, reply when a public response is useful, report only suspected policy violations, watch the available performance data and control who has profile access. An owner can do much of this directly; paid help can organize and track the work, but it cannot guarantee review removal or ranking.

Bulk verification is the route Google gives a business with ten or more locations to have them verified together instead of one at a time. You put every location you manage into one spreadsheet, then apply under “Verifications” in Business Profile Manager, and Google reviews the account details.

You can create a Business Profile before the business opens and give it an opening date. After the date is entered and the business is verified, Google shows the profile 90 days before that date.

List the places you will actually travel to, named as cities, postcodes or regions rather than as a distance, and no more than twenty of them. Google asks you to be as specific and accurate as possible, and the areas you name are a promise to somebody holding a phone.

Most reputation work is free and always has been: replying to every review, correcting the facts on your Google Business Profile, asking real customers, and watching what appears under your name. What money buys is not access to a secret, it is somebody doing all of that every week when you are busy doing your actual job.

A reputation management plan is a written list of the work, in order, with a name against each job and a day in the week when it happens. If it contains a position, a date or a ranking instead of jobs, it is not a plan, it is a promise, and nobody is able to keep those.
