How a local business is found on Google Maps and in search, what online reputation is, and how to check your own visibility from outside.
SEO reputation management is two jobs sold under one phrase: search work on the pages you own, and review work on your Google Business Profile. The search half decides what a stranger finds under your name, the review half decides what they read when they arrive, and neither can honestly be sold to you as a position.
In a reputation crisis, first separate what actually happened from what you suspect. Correct confirmed business problems, keep public replies factual and privacy-safe, report reviews only when you can identify a Google policy issue, and use Google’s dedicated extortion route only when someone is demanding money, goods or services in exchange for removing negative reviews. A burst of bad reviews, an unfamiliar name or no matching booking can justify investigation, but none proves an organised attack by itself.
Every location needs its own Business Profile, its own details and its own text, because Google’s local results are based partly on how far each business is from the person searching. What breaks a chain is copying: the same description, the same photographs and the same phone number on every location.
A local citation is any page outside your own website where your business name, address and phone number appear: a directory, a booking site, an association page, a social profile. They matter because Google also builds your profile from what it finds elsewhere, so those pages have to say what you say.
Reviews live on each location’s own Business Profile, so whoever holds owner or manager access to that profile is the only person who can reply to them. A franchise brand manages reviews by holding or being granted that access location by location, not by managing one account for the whole name.
An agency asks you to fill in the brief yourself because only you know how your business actually works, and because something said on a call does not survive the month. Written down it stays, and everything published about you afterwards is built out of it.
In the first week a marketing agency should look at your competitors alongside your business, get a brief out of you in writing, and come back with before and after charts and a forecast given as a range. What it should not do is name a date or a position, because nobody can.
Because the number you compare is a monthly fee, and the cost arrives later as repair work. At the low end you buy a slice of somebody’s time who must keep signing new clients, so the days go on pitching rather than on your profile.
A one-month marketing pause does not have one universal effect. A paused Google Ads campaign stops showing ads and stops accruing new campaign charges, while organic search has no equivalent pause switch. If the website stays online, its existing pages can remain available, but new work, monitoring and corrections may stop. Google reviews can still arrive and staff can still request them if the business keeps doing so. Agency fees, retainers, tool costs and what work carries over depend on the actual agreement and should be confirmed in writing before the pause.
A monthly report should show what was done, what Google’s own statistics say happened, and what is planned next, in words you can read without help. The numbers that count are Google’s own: searches, calls and direction requests on the profile, and clicks, impressions and average position for the site.
