Do businesses get notified of Google reviews?

Published by Madloba Consult Published Updated

Yes. Google can notify a business about new reviews by email, Search or Maps. Check the Customer activity setting, but do not treat a silent inbox as proof that nobody has reviewed the business. Check the reviews on the correct profile too.

If a customer says they left feedback and you cannot find an email, start with the review itself. A visible review with no alert and a review that is missing from the profile need different checks. Changing notification preferences will not explain every missing review.

How do you turn on alerts for new Google reviews?

In Google Search, open your Business Profile and choose More → Notifications. Enable Customer activity for review and photo alerts. In the Maps app, the profile's notification list is under Business → Notifications. Google's notification guide describes the available channels without promising that every event reaches every channel.

Use the account and location you actually intend to manage. For example, if you look after two branches, finding a review on one branch does not explain the missing alert for the other. Check the business name and address before changing anything.

Keep the aim simple: make it possible for the person responsible to notice new feedback. You do not need to change profile ownership, remove a claimed business or share a password merely to troubleshoot a notification.

What should you check on a phone?

The Business Profile setting and the phone's handling of Maps notifications are separate places to check.

  • Android: in Maps, open your profile picture or initial, then Settings and Notifications. Review the relevant category. See Google's Android instructions.
  • iPhone or iPad: Google's instructions cover both Maps notification preferences and the device's Settings → Notifications → Google Maps permission. See the iPhone and iPad instructions.

Follow the page for the device you use. Do not apply an Android menu path as though it were the only path on every phone.

After checking settings, compare what you can actually see: a review on the profile, a notification inside Maps, an email, or a phone alert. This comparison is a troubleshooting suggestion, not a guarantee that switching a setting will resend an older notification. You do not need to post a test review to make it.

Who should check reviews when several people manage the profile?

Agree who is responsible for reading feedback and who covers their absence. Do not assume that another manager must have received the same email.

Google allows owners and managers to work through their own Google Accounts. That avoids sharing one person's password. The notification help page does not establish a universal rule that every manager receives every alert, or that only the primary owner does.

A practical arrangement might be a shop owner checking the profile at a suitable point in the working day and an existing manager covering days off. That is an example of dividing responsibility, not a Google requirement or a promised service schedule. Each person should check their own access and notification preferences.

If two people are about to answer the same complaint, decide who will respond before either publishes. Receiving an alert and having permission to speak for the business are different responsibilities.

Why might a customer say they posted but you received nothing?

First check whether the review is visible on the correct profile. The following examples illustrate the distinction; they do not diagnose a particular customer's account.

What you find What it tells you Useful next check
The review is visible, but you cannot find an email You can read the feedback now; the missing message is a separate issue Check your account, preferences and inbox folders
There is a Maps notification but no phone alert The app contains a notice that you did not see as a phone alert Review the device and Maps settings
The customer can see their contribution, but you cannot find it on the business profile You have not established that it is publicly visible there Check the correct listing and the missing-review guidance
A restriction or temporary-pause notice appears There is a specific notice to read Follow the route described in that notice

Google says that review checks can sometimes take a few days. This describes a possible review delay. It is not an email-delivery deadline, a promise that a particular review will appear, or evidence that every silent inbox means moderation is in progress.

Reviews can also be affected by policy enforcement, profile changes and availability limits. Google acknowledges that its spam detection can make mistakes. Avoid telling a customer that a missing review proves wrongdoing. Likewise, their statement that they posted does not establish which profile or public view you should be seeing.

A useful answer could be: “Thank you for letting us know. We cannot see it on this location's profile yet. If convenient, could you check which listing you used?” This is a suggested wording, not a claim about a real customer. Do not ask for their password or pressure them to keep submitting copies.

Does Google notify an owner when a review is removed?

Some Google messages concern a specific enforcement or protection process. They should not be treated as a complete record of every removal.

Google's Business Profile restrictions guidance says owners receive an email if Google plans to apply a restriction for fake engagement. Separately, its 16 April 2026 announcement describes removing a spike of spam, temporarily pausing new reviews, alerting the owner and displaying a public explanation. That announcement described a global rollout; it does not establish that a particular profile has received an alert.

A protective pause during a spam attack is different from a restriction imposed because a business violated policy. Read the notice before deciding which situation applies.

There is another distinction in Google's 7 April 2025 announcement: warnings about suspicious five-star reviews help people understand possible manipulation at a place. The announced U.S., U.K. and India rollout was not a promise of a private owner email for every removed review. The post also described planned expansion beyond those countries, so they should not be presented as a permanent country limit.

If you have reported a review, the reporting and appeal process has its own status and email updates. Check that process rather than relying on an ordinary new-review alert.

Which messages are about something other than a new review?

A message about your reply concerns a different event: Google says the reviewer is notified when you reply. That does not establish a fixed notification timetable for a business receiving a new review.

Likewise, the April 2026 announcement describes proactive emails about important suggested changes to business details. Those profile-edit messages do not give an owner the right to approve or veto customer reviews.

Read what the message actually says. A notice about a changed business name, a review reply and an appeal decision calls for a different response in each case. None should be taken as proof that all ordinary review notifications are working.

What should you do when a one-star alert arrives?

Open the full review on the correct profile before deciding what to do. An alert can draw your attention to feedback, but the rating alone is not enough to choose a response.

For a complaint about a long wait, for example, identify the concern and check what you can accurately say. A short acknowledgement and an appropriate private contact route may help. Do not announce a refund, a completed investigation or a policy change unless the business has actually authorized or completed it.

If the content appears to violate Google's rules, use the reporting route and identify the relevant issue. Google advises against reporting simply because you disagree with or dislike a review. An unfamiliar display name is not, by itself, proof of a fake customer.

You also do not need to publish an immediate reply just because the phone buzzed. Take enough time to check the facts and keep private details out of a public response. See how to respond to negative Google reviews for examples.

Where should you start if alerts are unreliable?

Use the review list as a direct check of the feedback currently available on that profile. Google documents how to read reviews and reply; replying requires a verified business, and reviews are available only for certain categories and countries or regions.

If a review is visible, deal with its content without waiting for the missing email. If it is not visible, investigate that separate issue. This avoids changing unrelated settings or promising a customer a delivery time you cannot establish.

Frequently asked questions

do businesses get notified of google reviews

Yes. Review alerts are available through Business Profile notifications. Delivery is not a substitute for checking the profile, and a missing alert does not prove that a review was never posted.

how to get notifications for new google reviews

Open the profile's notification preferences in Google Search and enable Customer activity. Check Maps app settings separately if you want phone alerts, using the instructions for your device.

Why did a customer say they left a review but I got no alert

There is more than one possible explanation. The review may not be public yet, or you may have missed a notification for a review that is already visible. Open the correct profile first, then investigate either review visibility or notification delivery. Do not assume that the customer is lying or that Google is holding this particular review.

Can I turn review notifications off

Yes, you can change your notification preferences. That does not turn off the business's reviews, and Google may still send important updates. If you silence alerts, arrange another way to check new feedback.

Does Google tell me when it removes a review from my profile

Google describes owner notifications in specific circumstances, including planned fake-engagement restrictions and protective action against a spike of spam. That is not a promise of an owner email for every removal. Public warnings about suspicious reviews are also different from private owner alerts.

Where do I find reviews I missed

Open the business's review list on the correct Business Profile. If the review is visible, you can read it without finding an old email. If it is absent, use the missing-review guidance rather than assuming an email setting will restore it. Availability depends on the business category and country or region.
