What is LLM SEO?
LLM SEO is an informal industry label for work intended to improve how a business or its information appears in experiences powered by large language models. LLM means large language model. In a service proposal, the phrase often concerns AI search visibility, but the name alone does not tell you what work will be done.
It does not mean that someone can rewrite an assistant’s knowledge about your business on demand. Improving a website, making information accessible to a search system and training a model are different activities. Before buying anything, establish which of those the proposal actually concerns.
what is llm seo
Think of the term as a question about discovery: when someone asks an AI-powered service for information relevant to your business, can they find an accurate answer, and what evidence would show that?
A large language model generates text using learned patterns and the context supplied to it. Google’s introduction to LLMs explains model training and text generation. The model is one part of a product; a product may also use search, retrieved pages or other tools. Calling something “LLM SEO” does not specify which part you are trying to influence.
For a business owner, that distinction changes the questions to ask. “We will clarify these service pages and check their search eligibility” is a reviewable proposal. “We will make the model know you” needs a much more precise explanation of the system, the method and the limits.
A supplier can be responsible for completing agreed work without controlling every answer an external service produces. Judge the proposal by that work and its evidence, not by the technical sound of its name.
what is llm seo called
Related terms include LLM optimization, AI search visibility, AEO and GEO. AEO expands to answer engine optimization; GEO to generative engine optimization. Their meanings overlap in industry usage, but a content review, a technical audit and monitoring selected answers are not interchangeable deliverables.
Google’s generative AI optimization guide recognises AEO and GEO and places optimization for its own generative Search features within SEO. That is a useful platform-specific position. It does not establish that every service sold under an AI label is identical, or that all assistants work like Google Search.
If two proposals use different names, compare what they actually include. Which pages will be examined? Which product is the target? Who approves factual changes? Will the result be a corrected page, a report of observations, or both? Those differences matter more than choosing the newest acronym.
Training, retrieval and citation are separate
These words describe different processes, and confusing them can make an ordinary content edit sound more powerful than it is.
| Term | What it describes | What a website edit does not prove |
|---|---|---|
| Training | A process that changes model parameters using training data | That a particular external model has learned the revised business fact |
| Retrieval | Finding information to help answer a current request | That every assistant fetched your page for every question |
| Citation or supporting link | A visible reference presented with an answer | That the answer endorses the business or uses the source accurately throughout |
| Visit | A user reaches your site | That the visitor will become a customer |
Google describes retrieval and related searches in its generative Search documentation. That helps explain how current pages can contribute to an answer without treating each update as a new model-training event.
If a business is named in an answer, you cannot infer from that observation alone that its website was in a training dataset. If a page is linked, read the passage it supports. A link is useful evidence of that display; it is not a complete explanation of the answer’s construction.
This matters when correcting an error. First identify the wrong statement and any visible source. Fixing an inaccurate page you control is a concrete action. Promising to erase the same statement from every model is a different and unsupported commitment.
what is ai search visibility
Specify what was visible and where. Was the business mentioned in text? Was there a link to its website? Did the answer list a location, compare providers or explain a service? A report that combines all of these into one score can conceal important differences.
Google AI Overviews and AI Mode are examples of AI search experiences. Its AI features documentation describes supporting links and explains that their responses and links can vary. They are examples, not a complete list of every Google or third-party AI surface.
A supporting link can help someone investigate a fact without recommending the business. An accurate mention can be useful even when it brings no visit. Conversely, a flattering answer with the wrong location may be less useful than a plain link to correct information.
Keep the observation intact: the product, question, date, wording and visible links. That is more informative than a screenshot labelled simply “AI rank”. It also lets you compare the answer with the source rather than guessing what happened behind the scenes.
what is ai visibility in seo or search
For Google Search, familiar SEO foundations still matter. A supporting page must be indexed and eligible for a snippet, alongside the applicable inclusion conditions. Meeting those conditions does not guarantee crawling, indexing or display. A failed manual search is not a complete test of index status.
The distinction is between being eligible and being selected. A page may answer a question well but not appear in the response you observe. The product may use other sources, and results can vary. That absence deserves investigation within a defined scope, not an automatic conclusion that the site needs rebuilding.
The same caution applies to ordinary search positions. An AI appearance is not simply a renamed position in a list of links. Compare the actual outcomes instead of assuming that improving one observed result will reproduce the same change everywhere.
what is llm seo optimization
Start with an identifiable information problem. Is a service described too vaguely? Does the page omit a condition a customer needs? Does the available technical evidence show a relevant access obstacle? Choose a change because it addresses that problem.
For a hypothetical appliance workshop, imagine the website says “all repairs” while the business only handles selected household appliances. The useful improvement is to explain the real scope and exclusions. It prevents a customer from assuming the workshop repairs equipment it does not accept. It does not guarantee that an assistant will cite the revised paragraph.
Technical work should be equally specific. A site manager can investigate indexing, discoverability through links and applicable controls. They should distinguish an accidental restriction from a deliberate publishing choice before changing it. A live URL test alone is not proof of indexing or AI inclusion; Google’s inspection guidance explains that limit.
Google does not require a special AI text file, mandatory short-block style or special schema for its generative Search features. That does not mean every format is useless in every other system. Ask for the documented purpose of a proposed addition and whether it solves a problem on this site.
Content should remain useful to a person. State real conditions, use examples that clarify the decision and make the next step understandable. Do not add unsupported services, credentials or customer stories just to make a page seem more authoritative.
Can I keep my site out of Google's AI answers?
Google’s Search generative AI control covers specified generative features and offers include, exclude and inherit choices. In Search Console it is under Settings → Search generative AI. A property may inherit its parent’s choice, so the effective setting matters.
That control is separate from model-training controls and from excluding content from ordinary Search. It also does not override other publisher choices for services such as Merchant Center or Google Ads. Do not assume that one setting governs every use of your information across Google or other companies.
Preview directives have their own effects. A restriction on one part of a page is not the same as excluding a site through the generative control or removing a page from Search. Have the authorized site manager check the relevant rule and its scope before recommending a change.
An AI visibility project should respect the publisher’s decision. Increasing exposure is not a reason to quietly undo a deliberate exclusion, and a settings change should not be presented as an instant guarantee about what every user will see.
What this means for a small local business
Check information you legitimately control: the website, the relevant Business Profile and other business-managed records. Useful details include what you offer, where customers should go and how they can contact you. Do not assume that most of an assistant’s information necessarily comes from one of those places.
If the website and profile disagree about a branch’s hours, establish the real hours before editing either. If an answer draws on a third-party page, distinguish a correction you can make yourself from one you would need to request. Independent reviews are not business-owned copy that you can rewrite.
Google’s local ranking guidance discusses relevance, distance and prominence. Those factors explain local results; they are not a complete account of every AI response. Accurate local information is useful, but it cannot be sold as a guarantee that an assistant will recommend the business.
For sensitive services, improve general information without publishing private customer details. A clinic can explain its services without confirming who attended it. Public clarity does not require disclosing private relationships.
Do AI answers send anyone to my website?
They can, through links. Google’s AI Mode help describes links for further exploration and notes that responses can contain mistakes. Availability and the interface depend on the current product conditions; use the documented options actually available to you.
The presence of a link is not evidence that someone clicked it. A click is not evidence that the visitor made a suitable enquiry. Keep those steps separate when discussing results with a supplier.
Google’s Generative AI performance report measures impressions of links in covered Search features, including AI Overviews and AI Mode. It is not a count of every mention across assistants. The help page also gives reasons a report may be absent; absence alone does not establish a penalty.
Use the reporting you have for visits and enquiries, and be clear about what it can attribute. Do not turn a before-and-after chart into proof that one paragraph caused a sale. Repeating a prompt can produce another observation, but it is not a controlled experiment.
How to check this yourself
Choose one real question that affects whether someone should contact the business. Read the existing answer on your site and verify its facts with the responsible person. If the answer is unclear or wrong, define the correction before looking for an AI-specific trick.
Next, separate information quality from technical eligibility. Ask the authorized site manager to check the relevant page and publisher controls. Record deliberate restrictions rather than assuming they should be removed.
If you inspect an AI answer, preserve its wording and links and compare them with the source. Decide whether the finding concerns an incorrect fact, a missing link or an outcome you have not measured. Each calls for a different response.
For help defining that work, see Madloba Consult’s AI visibility service. Agree the pages, facts and observations to be reviewed. Do not assume the label includes monthly monitoring or guarantees about citations, ranking or enquiries.

Frequently asked questions
what is llm seo
LLM SEO is an informal industry label for work intended to improve how a business or its information appears in experiences powered by large language models. It can include search visibility, source accessibility and clearer content. It is not a guaranteed placement programme, and improving a website is not the same as training an external model.
what is llm seo called
You may hear LLM optimization, AI search visibility, answer engine optimization (AEO) or generative engine optimization (GEO). These labels overlap, but do not define identical services. Ask which product, pages and outcome a proposal concerns. Google treats optimization for its generative Search features as part of SEO, not proof that every assistant uses the same requirements.
what is ai search visibility
AI search visibility concerns what appears in an AI search experience: for example, a mention of a business or a supporting link to a page. A mention, a link impression and a website visit are different observations. Google’s Search generative AI report measures impressions of links in covered features, not every brand mention or completed enquiry.
what is llm seo optimization
For a website, useful work can include correcting unclear information, addressing documented access or indexing problems, and checking the applicable publisher controls. For Google Search, established SEO foundations remain relevant. There is no required special AI file, writing format or schema that guarantees inclusion. State the platform and the problem before choosing a change.
what is ai visibility in seo or search
It is the visibility of information within a specified AI search product, rather than a single universal rank across all language models. For Google’s supporting links, indexed and snippet-eligible pages must also meet the applicable inclusion conditions. Eligibility does not guarantee selection, and one observed answer cannot establish how all users will see the business.
Can I keep my site out of Google's AI answers?
Google provides a Search generative AI control in Search Console for its covered features. It supports inclusion, exclusion and inheritance from a parent property. Exclusion through that control is distinct from blocking ordinary Search or limiting model training. Other preview directives have different scopes, so check the effective settings rather than treating every restriction as equivalent.
Do AI answers send anyone to my website?
They can send visitors through supporting links, but displaying a link does not mean it was clicked. Track the visits and enquiries your available measurement can establish, separately from impressions or manual observations. Neither an AI mention nor a content edit guarantees traffic, suitable customers or sales.
